Last check, if I fret a string at the third fret I want to be able to measure a gap at the first fret - it might be only 2 or 3 thou but I want some gap. Depending on the guitars and player I have some target values - a reasonable "low fingerstyle" measurement at the first fret might be something like 0.0014 for the high E and 0.018 for the low, with the other string gradually rising from high to low. As I cut the slots I want to approach that line but not actually get there.Īfter setting the relief (which I don't change) and getting the 12th fret action close, I measure the first fret action with feeler gauges. When I start making a nut I draw a line on the blank with a pencil that I have sanding in half - it makes a line equivalent to having a zero fret.
